Manson 19 vs. Brewster 13
Coach Scott Ward reports:
Manson 6 6 7 0
Brewster 0 0 13 0
The Trojans traveled to Brewster Friday night and escaped with a hard fought victory. This was a very important league game for us and we knew that we had to win. Brewster is a tough football team and if you want to be a top team in this league then at some point youíre going to have to beat a top team.
There were many times in the game when our offense sputtered, turning the ball over 6 times, but our defense did a great job and held us in the game like they have done all season. Our offense has done a pretty good job all year putting up points but ultimately it has been our defense that is winning games for us.
Despite much of our sloppy play we seemed to be in the driverís seat for much of the game until a costly turnover late in the 3rd quarter allowed Brewster to gain some momentum. At that point we were up 19 to 6 but Brewster quickly capitalized on a deep go pass that brought them within 6 points and they appeared to have regained some confidence. The 4th quarter was a true battle with neither team wanting to give up ground. Our defense would sometimes bend but it never broke and it seemed that we were finally able establish a running game without turning the ball over. Ultimately our defense was able to hold on a 4th and 1 and allowed us to run out much of the clock on the ground. Brewster did have a couple of chances in the final seconds but Uriel Lopez came up big for the Trojans, intercepting a deep pass and finalizing the win. It was truly a total team effort.
I have to give a lot of credit to our assistant coaches this week; Jim Harding, Bill Thompson, Constantino Montez, Scott Meyers, and Brad Barnes, who all did an excellent job of preparing the boys for the game. They worked hard all week and it really showed on Friday night. I also have to give a lot of credit to our players. They had several opportunities to hang their heads and throw in the towel but I didnít see any of that. They really dug deep and played with their hearts. I am very proud of them.
I would also like to thank, once again, our fans who traveled up to Brewster and supported our team. The support is always appreciated. Our next game is in Manson against a very good Liberty Bell team on October 14 at 7:00 PM. This is Mansonís homecoming and senior night. We hope to see you all there.
