Game MVP: Abby Bridgewater
Tonight just didn't go the way we had hoped or planned it would go. After jumping out to a six nothing lead to end the first quarter we really struggled the rest of the night. During that first quarter things went very well and almost exactly as planned. They put up shots and we blocked out on every rebound creating many one-and-ones for them at the offensive end. We also were very fortunate to have them miss some easy lay-ups created by our turnovers.
As the game progressed we somehow forgot how to block out giving them many second, third and fourth chances. Defensive rebounding, unforced turnovers, mental mistakes and free-throws were our demise tonight. We really needed more people to step up tonight. Unfortunately, other than Abby Bridgewater, we really never got going offensively and we had a hard time getting the ball into Abby for long periods of time.
At the same time we really have to give credit to Oroville, as they didn't fold the tent after a rough first quarter on the road. They played with a lot more confidence in the second half and their bench really gave them a huge lift when they needed it the most. As a team they were perfect from the free-throw line.
We will fix some things during our next two practices and get ready for a huge weekend with a home game Friday with Bridgeport and a road test at Oroville Friday.
Cheyanne McFadden played really hard tonight even though she got knocked down all over the floor, and found a way to make three steals. Ofelia Rodriguez had another solid game with six boards, one assist and three steals. Ofelia did an incredible job defensively on very good and much taller player tonight, holding her to ZERO points. Her mother also makes some really good tacos on game nights. Sierra Miller worked hard to get two offensive rebounds and was on the floor every time there was a loose ball. Jaque Guillen was her usual aggressive self as she racked up seven rebounds and two assists. Hailey Ellsworth didn't have the game she normally has scoring, but she made up for it with ten rebounds and four assists. Thalia Lepley did a great job defensively in the post denying the ball and forced them into some really tough shots, because of her ball denial she had two steals. Abby Bridgewater had a monster game with yet another double-double! Abby was stat filler with thirteen points, twelve rebounds, two assists and five steals. Abby also shut down one of their best players holding her to six points with only one basket from the field. Itzel Castro did her thing again defensively. She put a lot of ball pressure on their guards forcing them into a couple turnovers. Angelica Suarez got hurt in our first game of the year, but NEVER misses practice, continues to be a very valuable team captain and is a master of stats during games with Coach Bromme.
