On Friday and Saturday, Ofelia Rodriguez and Marcus Vanderholm competed in the state 2b track and field championship. Typical of the weather we have had over the past 2 months, it was overcast and cold for most of the events.  The only good news from this is that this is what the kids are used to running in by now.

Ofelia competed in the 100m and 200m preliminaries on Friday.  Ofelia finished 5th in her heat in the 100 and 8th in her heat in the 200. Unfortunately, these were not fast enough to advance to the finals the next day.  I know Ofelia felt that she had run better races this year, but as her coach I thought she ran great and should feel nothing but pride in her performances.

Marcus ran in the 1600 on Friday and finished 11th in the final. Marcus lopped 9 seconds off his best time and ran a superb race in a time of 4:46.  On Saturday he ran in the 3200 and also finished 11th overall and took 17 seconds off his season’s best time.  The time of 10:43 is also a new school record.  Marcus has shown the ability to run his best against the toughest competition and the state meet was no different.

Our season is now complete.  Our team consisted of almost all sophomores and freshman so I expect next year to be even more successful for Manson.  I sense that the students detect some enthusiasm for the program as I have had several kids who did not run this year approach me and tell me they look forward to participating next year.
