Manson Baseball vs. Oroville

Coach Chris Hill reports:

05/04/2010

GAME #1: MANSON 8 - LIBERTY BELL 3

This game got off to a bad start for us and a great start for Liberty Bell as they got three runs on three hits and one error in the first inning. After that rough start we settled down and only let one more runner reach base the rest of the game, even though Liberty Bell hit the ball hard most of the game. In the first inning Liberty Bell showed what they could do offensively as Ryan, Cupp and Jones all hit the ball really hard. Schuyler Neff returned to action for us and led off the bottom of the first inning with a well hit single up the middle and later scored on bomb hit by Cole Matthiesen! Throughout this season after a home run while struggle at the plate right after, but not this time as Nathan Coggins got up next and hit a ball hard to short and reached on an error. Jordan Pittman stepped up next and ripped another single, and was followed by Curtis McClellan who hit yet another single Stellan Giffin finished up the first inning hitting with a single of his own. After the first inning we were only able to get two more runs in the game by Cameron Peters and Stellan Giffin. I really have to hand it the Liberty Bell pitcher (Ryan) because after that first inning he really settled down and pitched a great game, he really doesn’t play like a freshman at all. Fortunately for us we have our own pitcher; Cole Matthiesen pitched a gem of his own after the first inning. Matthiesen gave up on four hits (to a very good hitting team,) struck out nine and walked none. We got great offensive games from Schuyler Neff, Cole Matthiesen and Stellan Giffin.

GAME #2: MANSON 11 - LIBERTY BELL 23

This game didn’t as well for us, Liberty Bell scored early and often. They proved that they as good a hitting team as anyone we have seen this year. This was the first time in a long time that we had less hits than our opponent, but at the same time our kids showed their heart by battling back after getting down 9- 0 in the second inning. Stellan Giffin started on the mound for us and held Liberty Bell to only two runs in the first, but struggled a little with his control so we went to Schuyler Neff in the second inning for his first appearance on the mound in over two weeks. It was good to see Schuyler back on the bump battling and getting ready for this weekend’s crucial games with Waterville. Even though Neff didn’t have his best stuff he still worked hard and hung in there to the end, it showed a lot of heart the way he played today. Liberty Bell got a pretty good outing of their own from the lefty, Jones. Schuyler also came up big at the plate for us with another two hits. Cameron Peters reached base three out of his four plate appearances. Nathan Coggins got anther two hits in this game, one of them a double. Curtis McClellan hit the ball hard for two hits also. But in the end Liberty Bell’s hitting and our free passes to their hitters was the difference in the game.
