Cashmere faces tough Chelan team in battle for shoe
by Richard Uhlhorn
It was a hard hitting game that had Cashmere reeling from Chelan's defense. The Goats came up with 117 tackles and assist in a great football game that Chelan ended up losing 31-13. The score doesn't tell the story.
Both the Goats and Bulldogs held each other out of the end zone in the first quarter of play. Then Cashmere scored twice in the second quarter with Chelan coming back just before halftime to score its own touchdown to go to the locker room behind by only one touchdown, 14-7.
In the second half, Cashmere was able to score 17 point on two blocked punts and one punt return. "We will be working hard on our punt teamthis week," said Coach Darren Talley. "We don't want to repeat that poor performance."
Chelan had a tough time moving the ball downfield on the run, but when they went to the pass play, the Goats quarterback, Michael Amsel, Jr. passed for 86 years and when he couldn't get the ball off, he ran for another 95 yards on the ground.
Robin Weathersby caught three passes, two of which went for touchdowns. Matt Peterson and Aaron McQuaid also had two catches each with McQuaid pulling one down for an 80 yard touchdown that was nullified on a holding call against Chelan.
Matt Pittsinger and Cole Schwartz led the team again with tackles, chalking up 21 and 20 respectively. "It is a testament to both Matt and Cole's desire to get to every ball carries on every play from sideline to sideline," stated Coach Talley.
Matt Peterson, Michael Amsel Jr. and Adam Hendricks added 11 tackles each to the game. From the defensive tackle position, Doug Ramsey had 10 tackles. "This is the most of any defensive lineman in the past four years," said Talley. "Doug is an exceptional athlete and moves really good for a big guy weighing in at 300 pounds."
Alex Cortez a freshman made his first start of the season and came away with seven tackles.Aaron McQuaid had seven tackles and one pass interception.Colter and Quin Courtney each had four tackles.Sophomores Jose Aparicio and Tyler James each had three tackles.
"Our special teams will get some major work time this week as we try to recoup from three devastating punt team errors that put us in quite a hole," said Coach Talley.
As the number five seed to the District playoffs, the Goats will end up on the Bulldogs field next Friday night at 7 p.m. in a loser out game. "We like it, we like it a lot," said Coach Darren Talley on the telephone Sunday night. "All our coaches are pretty excited and we will fix our punt team this week."

Coach Talley's Commentary
Chelan matches up in hard hitting game
This was one of the hardest hitting games of the year for our Chelan team. We had more defensive tackles (117 tackles and assists) in this game than any other this season. Both teams were bringing the heat all night long. No score in the first quarter by either team should have foretold this was going to be a defensive battle. Cashmere scored twice in the second quarter and Chelan came back at just before halftime and closed down 7 - 14 to the defending State Champion Cashmere Bulldogs. Cashmere capitalized on three Chelan punt team miscues scoring 17 points on two blocked punts and one punt returned for a touch down. We will work hard on our punt team this week and try not to repeat that poor performance.
Offensively Michael Amsel Jr quarterbacked a terrific effort against a hardened Cashmere defense passing for 86 yards and running for 95 yards on the ground. Robin Weathersby caught three passes on the night two of which went for touchdowns. Matt Peterson and Aaron McQuaid had two catches a piece and Aaron had one 80 yard TD catch nullified on a holding call.
Defensively Matt Pittsinger and Cole Schwartz continue to lead the team in tackles week after week, with 21 and 20 respectively. It is a testament to Matt and Cole's desire to get to every ball carrier on every play sideline to sideline. Matt Peterson, Michael Amsel Jr, and Adam Hendricks had great games, with 11 tackles each. Doug Ramsey for the second week in a row had 10 tackles from the defensive tackle position, which is the most of any D lineman in the past four years twice in a row. Doug is an exceptional athlete and moves really good for a big guy weighing 300 lbs. Alex Cortez a freshman made his first start of the season and came away with 7 tackles. Aaron McQuaid had 7 tackles and 1 pass interception. Colter and Quin Courtney each had four tackles. Sophomores Jose Aparicio and Tyler James each had 3 tackles.
Special teams will get some major work time this week as we try to recoup from three devastating punt team errors that put us in quite a hole.
