Schuyler Neff up to bat
Things were better this week against the same team that we played last Saturday the kids were more ready to play than before. I believe things are going to get better with each practice and each game as the kids are learning what it will take to first be competitive and then what it will take to win games. During this week of practice the seniors did a great job of helping the younger kids do what it takes to be prepared to play a baseball game.
After the first inning the kids really settled down and started to play some pretty good baseball, but unfortunately in the end many mental errors and a few physical errors really cost us. As the season progresses hopefully we will cut down the physical errors and totally eliminate the mental errors. The errors were not limited to one single person nor were they only on defense, but also on the base paths and at the plate. The big thing is that each and every player learned from each others mistakes and all of the kids worked hard all throughout the game, NOBODY ever gave up on themselves or their teammates. Right now our goal is to get better every day and be ready for our league games in two weeks. In my opinion the kids are doing a great job of working towards both of those goals. We just need to be able to capitalize on our opportunities, we loaded the bases up 3 different times in this game and twice we ended the inning with the bases still loaded, once we start finishing things who knows what this team can do.
Wade Gross pitched the best game he has pitched for us in the past two years; we just had a little trouble backing him up. That is part of the game of baseball and Wade accepted that in this game and continued to throw strikes and work hard to get ahead of most batters throughout the game. Wade also got on base every time he got up to bat with 2 hits while also reaching base on an error. Schuyler Neff hit a ball to left field that went further than any ball he has ever hit in his life, it was great to see him turn on a fast ball and drive it to the outfield for a triple and later scoring our first run of the game. Schuyler also played a superb game in centerfield tracking down numerous fly-balls and line drives to the gaps. Nathan Coggins also reached base every time he visited the plate as he was hit by a pitch once and got walked twice while scoring a run. Nathan also made a great play on a well hit ball to third base. Senior Robbie Pittman scored our other run of the day. Leonel Castro reached base twice by getting hit by a pitch and getting walked another time. Johnny Jones got our other hit on a bases loaded hit to third base.
