Fifth game is a charm for Chelan
Defeat Cascade 55-51 to make trophy round on Saturday
"I don't know why we do this to ourselves," Coach Tom Robinson told GoLakeChelan's Dave Spanjer in an after game interview that had Chelan squeaking a win from the Cascade Kodiaks 55-51 on Friday morning at the WIAA State 1A Basketball Championships.
The Lady Goats jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter of play and continued to keep the lead through the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Cascade started chipping away at Chelan's lead. By the end of the third quarter, Chelan's lead had been dwindled to only one point, 33-32 and that's when the Lady Goats had to tighten their belts and get down to business, because Cascade was determined to move into the trophy round on Saturday and send Chelan packing.
Cascade actually pulled ahead in the fourth quarter and both teams battled for the lead back and forth with Chelan finally getting an edge up about the middle of the fourth quarter, but Cascade kept it close.
Jaicee Harris had an incredible game for a sophomore. She pulled down 19 rebounds and pumped in 25 points for her team. In the first quarter alone, she had 16 points. Kelli Bowers also had a great offensive game with 12 points and Sydney Austin finished with 7 points.
Houston Robison had no points but pulled down five crucial rebounds and Jamie Brunner had two rebounds, four points and four steals on the day. Darby Jenkins also made good things happen under the basket.
"I can't say enough about the heart of these girls," said Robison. It was definitely the seniors who pulled this game out in the fourth inning. He lauded Houston Robison, Darby Jenkins, Jamie Brunner and Sydney Austin for the hard work they put into the win. "We're just happy to be here."
Chelan will play Toledo with game time beginning at in the Sun Dome. Play-by-Play will be called by Dave Spanjer on GoLakeChelan.com with color commentary being provided by Steve Stamps, ex-coach of the Lady Goats and the Wenatchee girls basketball team.
