LADY GOATS FALL TO CONNELL EAGLES 42-24

9 a.m. did not work well for the Lady Goats as the Connell Eagles took charge and never let Chelan into their opening game at the WIAA 1A State Basketball Championship in Yakima Wednesday morning, March 4.
"We got it handed to us," stated Coach Tom Robinson in a post game interview with GoLakeChelan's Dave Spanjer. "We missed a lot of cheap shots." He said he was frustrated with the tentative offense put forth by the Goats. The high scorer for Chelan was Taylor McClellan with six points. Everyone else had four or less.
"I think we played some good defense and I didn't think we'd get beat like that," said Robinson.

In listening to the game, it was obvious that Chelan's offensive play was not working for them.
At the end of the first quarter of play they were only down by 3 points 8-5, but Jaicee Harris collected her second foul in the first quarter and was forced to sit. Robinson put her back in early in the second quarter.
Connell hit a three pointer to put them up 11-5, then 13-5 as Chelan continued to turn the ball over on offense. Connell was also blocking out well, never letting Chelan to settle down.
Darby Jenkins added two points on a nice little jumper and then turned around and steals the ball for another good shot to get back to within four points. Kilee Lippincott stole the ball with less than three minutes left to put Chelan only two points down, 13-11.

Connell added two and Taylor McClellan added two to keep the game close 15-13. Kelli Bowers had a chance to tie the game from the free throw line, but untypically missed both attempts and then Darby Jenkins picked up her first foul of the game and Connell hit one of its two shots from the free throw line to give the Eagles a 16-13 lead.
Connell triple teamed McClellan, forcing a turnover in the final minute to take a five point lead. Bowers hit a shot and Connell answered to go to the locker room at halftime only five points up, 20-15.
Harris only had four minutes of play time in the first half because of three fouls. She came back into the game at the start of the third quarter in hopes of helping the team adjust to Connell's play.
Connell only allowed two points in the first four minutes of the third quarter and added five of their own to go ahead 25-19 with 1:30 remaining in the third.
Connell hit another three point shot to end the third quarter ahead 28-19, still not an insurmountable gap for Chelan to overcome if they could get their shots to go in the basket.
The fourth quarter of play didn't get any better for Chelan who began to play with some desperation. Coach Robinson tried to spark the team by putting Harris, McClellan and Brunner back into the game with AnnAlise Nelson already playing.
By the end of the game with the outcome evident, Coach Robinson gave some of his bench some experience on the court. Kari Williams, Lyndsey Fox and Sara Waszkewitz were put in for the last minute of play.
"We will get our focus back and work our way through the back door," said Coach Robinson. Chelan will get that opportunity tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Vashon Island.
