Thanks to the owners of Manson Red Apple Market, Jack and Gale Courtney, many educational programs and the students in those programs at Manson Schools will have a better learning opportunity in the coming year with their $10,000.00 donation in the form of the Giving Great Grants, G3 for short.
The Giving Great Grants Project, G-3 for short, is in its second year of existence here in our school. It all started in the fall of 2008 when Mr. Vergara, ASB Advisor, received a phone call from Beth Stipe, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of NCW, offering $10,000 dollars in grant monies donated by a generous community donor, Gale and Jack Courtney, owners of the Manson Red Apple Market and was geared toward educational related projects that would benefit both, the Manson School District and the Manson Community. The only condition was that the money was to be awarded by students for students to projects that would augment their educational opportunities.
This year 13 applications were received. The Manson High School ASB officers and class representatives met on January 19th to review the applications, determine whether the applicants followed the criteria for selection, and to decide whether the project would be fully funded, partially funded or not funded at all. The session went on for 4 hours before the students were ready to announce their selections. It was an exercise in discernment, advocacy and compromise.
The selection committee was composed of ASB officers: Alejandra Mendivil, ASB President; Bronte Toolson, ASB Vice-President; Monica Sanchez, ASB Secretary; Marcus Vanderholm, ASB Treasurer; and Freshmen Class President, Gladys Castro. These five students took it upon themselves to read through the 13 G-3 grant applications in preparation for making the final award allocations.
On Monday February 8th, the ASB officers who made up the selection committee, Beth Stipe and Mr. Vergara, were the bearers of good news and handed their award letters to the lucky recipients in person.
The MHS Associated Student Body and their elected representatives, would like to thank the generous donors, Jack and Gale Courtney, owners of the Manson Red Apple Market for making this project possible. We are truly thankful for their ongoing support of our school district’s mission: Continuous Student Learning!
