Newletter #2 REVISED 6/24/07
By Russell (Rusty) Miller (CHS Class 1960)
Graduation night for the Class of 2007 is Friday June 8. Video taping the event and maybe allow viewing of the tape on GoLakeChelan.com is being looked into and will probably happen.
Yard Signs: Carol Crim has come up with a neat idea. The idea is for households in Chelan with a connection to a Chelan High Graduate, any year, place a yard sign or something with the year that the person graduated from Chelan High School on the sign. The yard at my home would have 1960 (for me) 1963 for Mary Ruth (Miller) Harper (1963) and 1970 for John David (JD) Miller.
(added 6/5) Below is my first attempt at a yardsign. If I have time I will try making a better one. Will look around Chelan for others.
Open House at the present Chelan High School Saturday afternoon is set for 2pm to 4pm and open to the public not just CHS grads and family. The first 52 grads who attend this open house will be given a picture of the Class of 1907 on card from a card deck that has been printed up. Come early and chose which playing deck card you want. The class grads pictures hanging high on the walls of the present high school will be placed on stands for easier viewing. (changed 6/7) There are a set of pictures of the various high school buildings used over the years on display. There will be a display of Chelan High School annuals also at the high school during the open house. The annual collection is not complete for every year but there are a lot of them.

A AWARDS Dinner furnished by BC McDonalds at Riverwalk Park is being held by the Chelan Rotary Club as part of their Chelan Century Challenge bicycle event (as of 6/5 there were 162 entrants) that Saturday and is OPEN to the public not just CHS grads and family plus the Bicycle event entrants. CLICK HERE for the website for the Chelan Century Bicycle ride events. Links from there to other things like maps, where to stay etc.
The Saturday Night Awards Dinner is $15.00 per plate for the meal of Salmon, salad, roll, and vegetable to which the public is invited to attend. Please send a check made out to: Chelan Rotary Club soon as the Rotary needs a meal count several days in advance of the event. Make the check large enough to cover the number of dinners you want. Mail the check to Russell Miller, PO Box A., Chelan WA 98816. Enclose a SASE if you want a receipt. A list of names of who has paid will be at the dinner. Food serving time is about 4:00pm to 7:00pm. (The online registration for the bike is working but one can not sign up for the awards dinner only.)
Music: Will have DeJa VooDoo, a three piece group play at the pavillion in Riverwalk Park during the awards dinner mention above and also The King Biscuit Band will play. The awards will be given out starting about 6pm and the music will be before and after this. The music is free of charge and open to the public.
Other places in Chelan will have live music Friday and Saturday night as they usually do in the summer time.
Old Goat Buttons: Dick Slaugenhaupt Outstanding Junior Award and Scholarship committee has "Proud to be an Old Goat" buttons with 1907-2007 on them for sale for a donation to the Award and Scholarship Committee. They probably will be available on All Class Reunion Weekend.
Sunday nothing set up.
T-Shirt: (update 6/2) Have worked with Shirt Shop Plus in Chelan and used the logo that was developed at CHS this year and last year. People wanting T-shirts will need to place and pay for their T-Shirt in advance and pick it up at the event. Information about how you can order a shirt with the logo on it is call Shirt Shop Plus (509) 682-5789 or write them at PO Box 1436, Chelan WA 98816. Prices is $5.00 for the logo and the T-shirt basic price is $8.95 for a plain white one regular size. (XXL are more) (added 6/7) Some other colors than white work well also.
Below is the logo developed by Chelan High School student, Victoria Wright. The words "Chelan High School" in green will be added to logo below for the transfers from which the logo t-shirts can be made.
(updated 6/5) Here is what the T-Shirt looks like. I will try to get a larger picture soon.
I have been working on the lists of grads for all the years from 1907 to 2007 of all high schools connected with the Lake Chelan School District. (added 6/5) The Lake Chelan Mirror newspaper has printed the list in the June 6,2007 newspaper. Check their website http://www.lakechelanmirror.com/ for how you can subscribe to the paper or purchase a copy and get the list. (changed 6/7) I will have some copies for people to pick up a copy at the Open House at the high school. Pictures of the 2007 CHS grads are in this newspaper.
Pepsi has provided us with two banners. They will be hung on the outside fences at both Chelan School Buildings.
If you have not already done so please send me an (CLICK ON THE NEXT) e-mail and let me know that you plan to attend all or some of the weekend of the All Class Reunion in Chelan on June 8-10, 2007. I have a names on the websites listed below of people who said they were coming so far. Have room to list a lot more people and a few names have been added each week and total as of June 5 is about 200 total.
Heard from a member of the class of 1968 who now lives in Kodiak, Alaska who plans to be in Chelan on reunion weekend. The Crockett three sisters will be in Chelan on the reunion weekend.
Please let your classmates know about the reunion. Places are being set up i.e. the high school open house and the dinner Saturday evening, where every one who comes can gather as a large group but it is encouraged that classes get together in maybe 3-6 year groups at various places in the Chelan area. One class has reserved space at one of the local wineries for Friday evening. The Classes of 1960 and 1961 have set something up for the June 8th evening and Saturday afternoon. There are lots of local wineries now that were not here 5 years ago. And tours can be done via limos. Some links to the websites of the limo firms are next. One firm is CLICK HERE. Another one is CLICK HERE. Also this one CLICK HERE. I got these from the Chamber of Commerce website. Another one is run by Jerry Anderson's (class of 1959) daughter CLICK HERE.
For a place to stay if you need on check the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce website
The oldest living Chelan High grad I have found so far is Marjorie (Brown) McClimans a member of the class of 1927. She lives in Cashmere now. She will not be attending the reunion.
Phyllis (Cannon )Sargent is number 2 so far as she was in the class of 1929 and is living in Olympia. She was Chelan Princess in 1929 and was in the Wenatchee Apple Blossom parade. She married George Sargent, Class of 1930. She hopes to attend.
Phyllis in 1929 from a scan of the 1929 Class Photo hanging on the walls of the present Chelan High School. Photo below is the High School in 1929. The Class of 1929 was the first one to graduate from the 'new' three story High School Building.
The first class from Lake Chelan School District graduated from high school in 1907. CLICK HERE for the story in The Chelan Leader newspaper of 7 June 1907. Below is a photo of the Class of 1907.

The above photo in the size of 11" x 14" has been framed and will be added to the collection of photos on display at the Chelan High School.
How this got started: The class of 2007 will be number 100 so it seemed like a good idea to me and several other people it would be good to celebrate that in some way which is growing into several ways.
A idea I have is to list people who have told me they plan to be in Chelan during the All Class Reunion weekend. The reason for this is to allow other people to see who will be attending. Probably should only list peoples names and the class year. If people want to give out their e-mail address and other information that they could post at (Click here) Chelan High School Alumni which is already setup to accept this information.
I plan to post some photos here of information of what Chelan was like in 1907.
I have not found any more 1907 photos yet but thanks to Cecilia (West) Jones from her folks collection I have some CHS 1930's & 1940's photos.

The writting on the back of the photo is hard to read but I think the players standing from left to right are: Ira Bryant, Walter Schulter, Harlan Faris, John Anthony. Front Row: Bob "Blondie" Johnston, Perry Novotny, Harry "Flash" Spake, Edd Thomas, Clifford "Dizzy" Ward-Captain, Pete Lloyd Marchel, Carson Carter.

No names written on the back of this photo so I can't match the list of grads with their pictures. One of them is Les Carpenter who still lives in the Chelan area. Maybe he can match up the faces with the grads list I have. Some one else is working on getting names to go with the faces above.
The below photo is the 1949 CHS Basketball team who took 3rd place at the state tournament. Jim Talley provided me with the names of the players.
Back Row Left to Right:
Del Harn, Roland LaPorte, Louis Montoya, John Dodge, Jack Garton, Jerry Trinkle.
Front Row Don Oules, Al Boyd, Duane Starcher, Harold Hawley, Don Caron, Jim Talley.

The below photo of 1930 CHS Football team has no names written on the back so if you know who these fellows are please contact me. This photo shows the old school building which was moved to its present site and probably before it was turned into the present day apartments.

CLICK ON the photo to be taken to a larger size. There are some other old sports photos when you are taken to the photo webpage. What it says on the photos implies that I took them but I only supplied them to GLC.com.
